The Work

The Work

The Work was founded in 2003 to collaboratively create new work and to explore and expand new methods and means of performance. The work is committed to

  • creating original work rich in content and challenging ideas
  • creating work bold in presentation through constant exploration and play with theatrical convention and style
  • creating work that engages with the audience, promoting debate and the exchange of ideas between members of the audience; between audience, material and performers; and between the theatre and the wider community -- socially, politically, and intellectually
  • creating work from a collective ideal within a collaborative environment while exploring and expanding the possibilities of this democratic structure throughout all stages of creation and administration

Our theatre-work aims to be both textually rich and visually bold. While the style, tone, and subject matter of each project is entirely dependent on the evolution of material through a collaborative creation process, we are resolutely dedicated to exploiting the very essence of theatrical presentation: the fact it occurs in the present tense as an exchange between real people gathered together in a room.

As such, we believe the theatre has the opportunity to ask and address serious, difficult, and dangerous questions with unique urgency and immediacy. We strive to create work for the theatre, work that can exist nowhere else, work that exists beyond all other entertainment media: in the 'now' -- a place where theatre can again be 'modern,' contemporary, relevant and indispensable for our very difficult times.

Recent work includes Project C: On Principle developed at the BAC, and Project D: I'm Mediocre at the Tristan Bates Theatre and Project E: An Explosion at the BAC.
